Universities Cancel Spring Break. Will More Schools Follow?

Many hardworking students look forward to the three main school vacations: winter break, spring break and summer break. So I imagine that students at The Ohio State University are really bummed right now after the university just announced it is canceling Spring Break 2021.

According to this article, officials decided to change the academic calendar in order to reduce travel-related exposure to Covid-19. Instead of spring break, students will have two three-day weekends and will end classes in April.

Will Other Schools Follow?

Other universities have already made similar announcements. Public universities in Maine announced the cancellation of fall and spring breaks for this school year. On Friday, Kansas State University also announced the cancellation of Spring Break 2021.

From a health and safety standpoint, these cancellations make sense. It’s hard to forget the wild partying of spring breakers at Miami Beach earlier this year. One group of University of Texas students caused 64 cases of Covid after a spring break trip to Mexico earlier this year. Even ski resort spring break trips were not immune to virus breakouts.

Of course, I’m sure that some students will skip a few classes and travel for spring break anyway.

For me, the big question is whether my kids’ school district will make a similar announcement, or if students will be asked to quarantine after traveling over spring break. While elementary and high schools don’t have to deal with communal living spaces like universities have, the kids still spend 8+ hours a day together in cramped classrooms.

Although Covid-19 cases have been very high in Texas, the number of new cases is dropping steadily. As long as that trend continues, I can’t see the local school districts cancelling spring break. But, if the new cases start to spike as much as they did in July and August, all bets are off.

My family has a socially-distanced Florida island beach trip planned for spring break. I hope we can keep it. That trip is what’s been keeping me going these past few weeks.
