Last month, we donned our masks inside the post office for new passports for two of our kids. I wanted to get it done before my kids started school because the passport office hours are limited. For these passports, we had to go in person, as online renewal is not an option for kids.
Exactly four weeks later, I’m happy to report that we received both passports. This was much faster than we anticipated based on the government shutdown and delays for passport processing since March.
Why Do We Need Passports?
Our kids’ passports didn’t expire for a few more months. And, we don’t have solid international travel plans within the next 6-12 months.
But, I like to keep our passports updated just in case. It’s kind of a pain to get all of us to the passport office during open hours. If pandemic circumstances change and we have the opportunity to travel, I want to be ready.
We also have a few potential trips next year when we would need passports. I still have an airline voucher from a canceled Mexico trip from this summer, and we may use it for Mexico next summer. Also, my daughter and I are currently booked on a cruise for next fall (fingers crossed cruising is back to normal by then).
Regardless if we use the passports in 2021, we have more firm plans for international travel in 2022. I can’t wait!
Have you renewed a passport recently? Or, are you holding off until you have more definite travel plans?

My wife’s passport will expire in a year so good to know that the wait is not too awful.

Yes, hopefully it will stay that way.
