I Thought I Was Done Canceling Trips This Year…

I thought I was done postponing and canceling trips for this year. We moved our Disney World vacation to next summer and we postponed our trip to Cancun. We canceled our trips to the gymnastics Olympics trials as well as the tennis Laver Cup. The only trip left standing for the rest of the year was another road trip to Broken Bow for a cabin stay over a 4-day weekend. What could possibly go wrong with that?

Here is what went wrong: the school district decided at the very last minute to change the school calendar. While the first and last day of school remained the same (thank goodness, otherwise our Disney World trip for next summer is toast), certain days off changed.

The 4-day weekend we had planned to use in October is no longer a 4-day weekend. We now have a 4-day weekend over Labor Day in September. Of course, the cabin is already booked for those dates.

After some discussion, we decided to move the trip to Thanksgiving when my kids have the entire week off. We checked the cabin’s calendar, and it was available for the dates we wanted.

Unfortunately, Evolve Vacation Rentals has a long wait to make changes because people are canceling right and left. By the time our request got through, the cabin was booked by someone else for those dates. I requested to move our dates to a 3-day weekend in January while shortening our stay.

I’ve really just become numb to all of these disappointments this year. My kids have stopped asking about our next trips.

We’re finding other ways to escape the mundane and add joy to our lives. Last weekend, we splurged and rented a movie theatre for a private showing of Harry Potter. It was only $99 to rent the theatre. It felt good to sit down in a theatre and feel “normal” for a few hours. We plan to do it again next month with a different movie.

Had to cancel one trip this month that I booked in early May and ended up cancelling in late June, due to airline scheduling changes. Turns out where I planned to go had a dramatic increase in C19 infections the last two weeks. Took that as a sign: Keep Your Rear End At Home for a few more months.
