Key West just opened up to visitors this month, and the area is serious about keeping Covid-19 out.
Yesterday, the Monroe County Commission voted to require face masks in the Florida Keys until June 2021. The city of Key West already had this requirement, but now the rule applies to the rest of the Florida Keys. See this article in the Orlando Sentinel.
Face coverings must be worn over the nose and mouth in any business establishment that has a roof. Exceptions will be made for people while eating or drinking and while exercising in a gym as long as they are six feet apart. Children ages 6 and under are exempt.
Officers can fine people up to $500 for violating this rule.
While the new restriction goes through June 2021, the commission plans to revisit the decision quarterly.
Personally, I think this is smart. While I’ve admitted I don’t particularly enjoy wearing masks, I do understand they go a long way in helping to prevent the spread of Covid-19. Of course, I hope that a vaccine will be around this winter so that it will be even safer to travel.
Does this restriction make you feel safer to travel to Key West? Or, will you avoid places until masks aren’t required?

Cheers to you, FL Keys. Finally some officials that listen to the overwhelming majority or doctors, scientists, epidemiologists, and research.

Smart move! I’d rather go there than to many local stores that don’t require masks! Good job to the Keys leadership for following the science.

In fact, if worn incorrectly, you have an increased risk of COVID-19 infection due to touching your faces more often to adjust the mask. STOP the madness

Yes, most are always touching them! Really don’t think they do much good, but seems that most places will start requiring them! Depends on what you read, whether they really help.

Not that I planned to do any travel in the near future, my inclination to visit somewhere is even less where there are burdensome regulations and safety theater.

While this is no fun, it’s smart to follow the science. The obvious problem is going to be people who suddenly develop vague “respiratory problems” that preclude them wearing a mask even though the rest of the world manages just fine. Ironically, these are the same people who claim to believe in free market economics until that view becomes personally inconvenient. If they did have the conviction of their beliefs they would take their business elsewhere. Since that seems unlikely, enforcement is likely to be haphazard and normal people will bear the brunt of the problem as a result.

What a joke. Mask don’t do anything. I would flat out refuse.
