Since the pandemic started, many of us are still waiting on refunds for canceled or postponed trips and events. It’s frustrating to wait, especially when the money is necessary for new trips or even basic necessities during pandemic job losses.
Here are some refunds I’m still waiting on:
Gymnastics Olympic Trials: I already got my hotel points back, but I still haven’t gotten a refund for our tickets to the gymnastics olympic trials that were supposed to happen later this month. Ticketmaster is only refunding for events that have either been canceled or events that have a new date. USA gymnastics has listed this event as postponed with a date TBD, so people can’t get refunds under that status.
AA Miles for Florida Trip: Since our Disney World trip was canceled for late May/early June, we received a refund on our Spirit flights and a refund of points for our AA flights that we booked through British Airways (along with a refund of our taxes about a month later). But, we had booked one flight with AA miles directly, and we are still waiting for those miles to be refunded. I think it’s just a matter of us holding on the phone for a long time to speak with an agent.
Flights to Mexico: My family was supposed to fly to Cancun in a few weeks, but we decided to scrap the trip. I was hoping that Sun Country would cancel our flights, but so far they are still on. One of our flights did have a significant schedule change, so I hope we can get a refund based on that. I’m still working on it.
University Overnight Camp: My oldest was registered for a week-long overnight tennis camp at a college. We still haven’t received the refund. It would be nice to get it so that we could use the money for other tennis day camps in the area.
In total, the refunds are worth a few thousand dollars. I’m so ready to get past this pandemic and start planning significant travel again.

United and Hyatt were easy to deal with. Delta, however, refunded my award redemption ticket with an eCredit that expires in 2 years. I am working on getting that changed since Delta points don’t expire and who knows when I’ll be flying again, let alone on Delta. The hardest part is getting someone on the phone. I’m sad that all my UR points are now locked into Hyatt and United currency.
Nancy says
@Talchinsky Ugh, sorry to hear that! I hope you find some good uses for those points.

Booked a flight on Lufthansa for travel this summer to Europe. About $1900. Once the pandemic started, airline canceled a good portion of my itinerary on April19th. Have been promised a full refund having talking to their customer service twice. The more I read about dealing with Lufthansa and refunds, the worse I feel.
Nancy says
@Anonymous OH no! I hope you get your refund soon.

Call American right at 8am CDT when the Advantage team opens. Just this week my wife got hers refunded right away. Ten minute call. I did have to call three times waiting the ‘48 hours before I would see my miles’ line though. The third time my miles were in my account within 10 minutes of my call.

Received my Royal Caribbean refund. It took about 7 weeks, and that was with greasing the wheel after 30 days had passed.
Nancy says
@projectx I’m glad you finally got the refund! 7 weeks is way too long.

Amazingly, I actually received a refund from Norwegian Air for a a trip to London (after 60 days). All it took were cc chargebacks and a DOT complaint.
Nancy says
@Chris I’m glad you got the refund!

Holland America cruise to Alaska. They said 60 days and it’s been about 30…
Nancy says
@Mark Ugh, that sucks that it’s taking so long!

Had about 35 flights impacted. Still waiting on around $6800 in refunds.
Some are at the 2 month window now, with zero progress.
If anything, I’ve learned a new definition of PATIENCE!
Nancy says
@George Wow, I’d be chomping at the bit to get those refunds!

I have been told by other sources once it reaches the 60 day mark, contact credit card companies to dispute. That could help accelerate process.

I received my AA full refund and the extra charges on a different AA flight – but I’m still awaiting the miles from the second flight. Ticketmaster refunded my Chicago White Sox tickets, but I’m still waiting for my Milwaukee Bucks ticket refund.
Nancy says
@R Johnson I hope you get the rest of your refunds soon!
