Womp Womp: Another Trip Bites the Dust

This weekend, my family was supposed to spend the night in a treehouse bed and breakfast on a lavender farm. The property is less than an hour away from our house, and staying there in May has become somewhat of a tradition. We have stayed there for the last three years (see my original review here).

Unfortunately, we decided to cancel our stay 24 hours prior to arrival. Why? The weather forecast predicted an 80% chance of thunderstorms on the afternoon of our arrival and a 90% chance of storms overnight.  We rarely cancel a trip due to weather, but this place is an exception.

First of all, the last place we want to be during a thunderstorm is in a treehouse. Aside from the safety factor, my daughter is scared of storms and would have wanted to sleep with us. The treehouse has two separate structures for sleeping, and the adult bedroom only has a queen-size bed with no floor space. We would have been super squished with three of us in that bed.

But secondly, the main draw for staying at the treehouse is enjoying the outside space. Right below the treehouse is an above-ground pool and hot tub. There are trails to explore with bridges and surprising tree decorations. There is a pond with a boat, ducks and geese. We always visit the goats and donkeys and ride bikes around the entire farm. We relax in the reading nook attached to the tree high above the ground.

In short, we spend the majority of our time enjoying the outdoor amenities. But with rain, lightning and muddy trails, we would have been forced indoors. On any other year, that might not have been so bad. We could have played card games and popped popcorn. But, we’ve been staying inside as a family during this quarantine for the past three months, and it’s getting old.

Thankfully, the property has a flexible cancellation policy. As long as we canceled at least 24 hours in advance, we could get our deposit back. So, we made the call on Saturday to cancel.

It turned out to be the right call. The rain and thunder came, just as predicted.

My kids were disappointed. Mostly, they missed seeing the farm’s dog, Sam. But, we are thankful that we had three prior years of great weather for our treehouse stays.

Unfortunately, we can’t just rebook for another date. The treehouse is very popular and is booked up for the next two months.

As a consolation to our kids, we ordered takeout from the same place that we planned to bring with us to the treehouse. My daughter got to have a socially-distanced driveway playdate with a friend, and my son got some extra video game time. I showed my kids some photos of our next airbnb vacation rental for early July, and that cheered them up. All in all, the moping was minimal.

Have you ever cancelled a trip due to weather? How did you spend this holiday weekend?

Never due to weather but you did the right thing. Here’s to July.
