Last week, my family went to Broken Bow, Oklahoma for a quick getaway. This was a fairly low-risk getaway because:
- We drove instead of flying
- We didn’t even have to stop for gas
- We brought our own food and ordered takeout once
- We stayed in a remote cabin
- We didn’t interact with other people except for picking up the takeout order (which we also do at home)
I know there are some who believe that nobody should be doing leisure travel right now. I disagree, as long as it’s done safely and in accordance with local laws. Mental health is important, and this trip did wonders to lift us out of our quarantine funk.
The Cabin
Last month, we booked this cabin on Airbnb. It had lower rates for the months of April and May, as many places did to attract business.
I loved how the property was surrounded by trees and forest, which made it feel very private. The cabin as actually located in a neighborhood, but not like the crowded neighborhoods of the suburbs we were used to. Most houses sat on an acre or more of land, with land in between houses.
The cabin was very tastefully decorated and had a fabulous modern farmhouse kitchen. The photos on Airbnb are better than mine. My kids even said, “This cabin is a lot nicer than our house!”
The owners supplied the ingredients for s’mores.
The cabin had two bedrooms downstairs with king beds. Upstairs, the sleeping loft had a triple bunk bed, two built-in wall beds and a futon.
The loft had a foosball table, arcade game and some board games.
Our most-loved amenity was the wrap-around porch with hot tub. We used the hot tub a few times each day and night.
My daughter loved having her own swings in the back yard:
We also played ladder golf in the back yard and enjoyed the fire pit at night:
Activities in Broken Bow
Since we were social distancing on this getaway, we didn’t do any activities that people normally do while in Broken Bow. But, the area has a lot of options.
A few things we saw on our way to the cabin are: ATV and boat rentals, petting zoo, axe throwing, zip lining, mini golf, mini train ride, gem mining for kids, fishing lessons, casino, wineries and breweries. Plus, there are a lot of hiking trails at Beaver’s Bend State Park.
While we opted to skip all of those activities for this trip, we did find our own “hiking” in the cabin’s neighborhood. The dirt roads were hilly and deserted, so walking them counts as hiking in my book.
I realize this will sound like blasphemy to Coloradans, but I feel like I can say this since I grew up in Colorado: This place reminds me of Colorado. The trees and the hills are similar to the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Except it’s much closer to our home in DFW.
Bottom Line
My family was refreshed by our getaway to Broken Bow, and I’m so glad we went. Before this pandemic happened, I had already made a reservation for Broken Bow in October. Hopefully when we go back, the threat of coronavirus will be gone and we can enjoy more activities in the area.

Is this location doable without bringing groceries? You mention takeout but what are the local services like? Thanks
Nancy says
@Pam It’s probably doable without bringing groceries, although several of the restaurants were still completely closed (not even take-out) when we were there. Closer into town away from the cabins there are more restaurants, even a few fast-food ones. There is also a local grocery store about 7-10 miles from where we stayed and a local meat market right by the cabins where you can buy fresh meat to grill.

I didn’t realize either! Previously, I had only been to Oklahoma City and Tulsa.
