I Jumped on a Travel Deal for May, and I Can’t Wait to Get Outta Town

I know that everyone is getting stir crazy. Here in Texas, the stay-at-home order was lifted and we are in a gradual re-opening. But, the re-opening doesn’t mean much for my family. Social distancing is still required everywhere, and we are choosing to mostly stay home until we see more of a drop in coronavirus cases.

But admittedly, our house isn’t the best for a long-term quarantine. Over the years, we’ve invested more money in our travel fund than in our house fund. Our house lacks space and extra bells and whistles like a trampoline, swimming pool and outdoor living space.

My family wants a change of scenery. So, naturally I started to look at our options for safe travel. And I found some good deals! And no, I didn’t jump on a crazy low air fare to a faraway place. But, I still got a great price on a spring getaway.

Road Trip to Airbnb Rental

I figured the safest way to travel this summer and maybe even the rest of this year is to drive to a location and stay in a somewhat isolated rental house that has built in entertainment. I’m thinking houses with pools, hot tubs, pool tables….near lakes or hiking trails. We wouldn’t have to come into contact with others, but we could still have a short getaway.

I started browsing Airbnb and VRBO, and I found quite a few places offering discounts and deals for the month of May. Many of these hosts likely missed out on spring break business and are trying to recoup business going into the summer.

After hemming and hawing a bit, we decided to book a cabin getaway for this month! It’s a 3-hour drive, and we’ll bring our own food. The cabin is located in a forest area close to two state parks with many hiking trails. Something like this: (not the actual cabin)

The cabin itself has a kids’ loft with arcade games and foosball table. It also has a large outdoor deck with fireplace and hot tub. The outside has horseshoes, corn hole, ladder ball and a swing set.

When I first told my son about our upcoming getaway, he wasn’t too thrilled. “A cabin in the woods? Sounds boring.” But then I showed him the photos, and he perked up quite a bit. Now, he’s changed his tune.

The best part is we’re going next week! I’m counting down the days.

And Repeat Two More Times…..

We will be repeating this formula for vacation (driving to an isolated home rental) at least two more times this summer. Later this month, we have our annual visit to a treehouse on a lavender farm. It’s only an hour away, and we pretty much have an 18-acre farm to ourselves. See my original post on the treehouse getaway here.

Then for July, we found another rental that we just had to book. It’s a house on a 50-acre ranch with a pool and hot tub. It’s only a little over an hour’s drive away. Something like this:

OK, just kidding, it’s not the ranch where the TV show Dallas was filmed. But the property’s photos look great, and the reviews are very positive.

After lamenting all of the trips that we are losing this summer, it’s nice to be booking new trips. Of course, our trips this summer will be nothing like the trips to Disney World and Cancun that we had originally planned. But, they cost much less money and fewer miles, and I believe they will be enjoyable in an entirely different way. We may even add in another short getaway to a vacation rental if we find something that strikes our fancy.
