There has been a lot of speculation about when “normal” travel will resume and what changes will have to occur to keep everyone safe. While nobody knows for sure, it’s interesting to speculate based on innovations that are popping up.
Airplane Travel
One aircraft seat manufacturer, the Italian company Aviointeriors, just unveiled a potential seat design for economy seats. The layout puts the middle seat facing backwards, and all seats have a plastic barricade on the sides. See this post on The Points Guy.
This would be different, for sure! I am somewhat claustrophobic, so I don’t think I could handle the middle or window seat. Could you handle these seats?
However, putting in these seats would cost money, and most airlines can’t spend the money right now. I think it’s more likely that airlines would start doing temperature checks or require masks.
Social Distancing at the Beach
Charlie from Running with Miles recently posted about a possible transformation coming to European beaches this summer. The Italian company Nuova Neon Green recently proposed a solution to crowded beaches: plexiglass cubicles on the beach. See the full post here.
To be honest, it’s hard for me to envision these on beaches. It feels like turning a beautiful, natural beach into a faux office. But, I guess it’s better than no beach at all!
Hotels
Last week, Marriott outlined some changes in a press release. You can see more details in this post from Gary at View From the Wing.
Nothing here is too earth-shattering: more cleaning, hand sanitizing stations, signs to remind people about social distancing in the lobby, safer food buffets, etc. The biggest visual change would be adding plastic partitions to the check-in counter.
I’m very much in favor of these changes because they could mean less germs overall, even after Covid-19 goes away. Hopefully, the additional cleaning will cut down on other sicknesses, like flu and norovirus.
Overall Thoughts
I think it’s wonderful that companies are coming up with safer ways to enjoy travel. But, the big question is will travelers want to travel with these modifications? Or, will they just stay home and wait for Covid-19 to go away completely? What do you think?
