Today, Universal Studios announced that its theme parks in California and Florida would remain closed through May 31, 2020 or longer. This includes the parks, hotels and Universal CityWalk shopping/entertainment districts. You can read the full statement here.
For theme park tickets already purchased, Universal is extending the expiration date to December 18, 2020. If you can’t use the ticket before that date, you can apply the value to a new ticket for a future year. This policy matches Disney’s current ticket policy.
This news shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone. Theme parks in Asia are still closed, and those parks closed long before parks in the U.S. closed.
I fully expect Disney parks to follow suit, although Disney parks are currently closed “indefinitely” without a date attached.
What Can We Expect for June?
I’m purely speculating here. I feel like IF and only IF Disney and Universal open in June, the openings will be gradual. Maybe CityWalk and Disney Springs open first, or the resort hotels open. The parks will be the last parts to open.
Workers need to be re-hired and re-trained, and I’m sure the parks will be implementing new policies. Bob Iger, Disney’s former CEO, speculates that temperature checks may be required to enter the parks.
As some of you know, I was scheduled to go to Universal Orlando Resort at the end of May. I recently canceled that trip and received a refund for my on-site hotel. I had not purchased park tickets yet.
Are you surprised by this news from Universal? Does this affect a trip you have planned?
