Some of you who follow this blog (and our Facebook and Instagram pages) regularly know that my family is currently in Costa Rica for spring break. While we have had an unbelievably great time, I am feeling unsettled. A lot has changed since we left home.
Before I left home, there were zero cases of Covid-19 in Costa Rica. Now, there are 22 cases in the country, including one or more cases in the province where we are currently staying.
Before we left for spring break, the US had around 100 cases. Now, there are over 1200 cases. And, Trump just announced a travel ban from Europe. Festivals and sporting events are being canceled right and left.
I’ve been monitoring emails on vacation, and my kids’ school district shared that family members of a student have Covid-19. Members of the community have started a petition to extend spring break for an extra week.
My husband’s company has suspended travel and is requiring employees to work from home until the end of March (for now). My mom’s assisted living place is now closed to all visitors due to nearby cases of the virus.
As much as I want to forget about all that is happening in the world right now and focus on my current vacation, I can’t. It’s just too big. We have five trips already booked for the next few months that I never dreamed we’d have to consider canceling. But, we may not have a choice.
What a crazy time. I’m ready to go home. I want to be back in the US before there are any more travel bans or required quarantines. If we have to hunker down while this virus passes through, I want to be at home. Not here, or anywhere else. I’m relieved that we are starting our journey home today.
Readers, how are you feeling about the current state of events?
