It’s official! After hinting for months, Royal Caribbean Cruise Line finally revealed today that the first Oasis-class ship will be sailing from the port of Galveston, Texas beginning in November 2021. Drumroll please: It’s Allure of the Seas!
Yesterday, the cruise line signed an agreement with the port of Galveston to complete a new cruise terminal. This new terminal can now fit Royal Caribbean’s newest and largest cruise ships, including all of the Oasis-class ships and the new Icon-class ships coming in 2022. See the full press release here.
Royal Caribbean has been sailing from Galveston since 2002. Currently, Enchantment of the Seas and Liberty of the Seas sail from the port. Starting in November 2021, Allure of the Seas will also sail from Galveston.
Why Is This a Big Deal?
Royal Caribbean’s biggest cruise ships sail primarily out of Florida from Port Canaveral, Fort Lauderdale and Miami. People who live in Texas and in the middle of the country have to fly to the East Coast to see the latest and greatest from Royal Caribbean.
However, there is a huge demand for cruises leaving from Galveston. With this announcement, millions of people can now drive to a cruise port to experience a newer, updated ship instead of flying.
I’m personally excited because I see my family sailing on Royal Caribbean more often in the future. My boys loved our first family Royal Caribbean cruise on Anthem of the Seas last summer, and we have a cruise booked on Oasis of the Seas for early 2021. Galveston is a 6-hour drive from my house, so I am tempted to book Allure of the Seas when it starts sailing out of Galveston.
About Allure of the Seas
Allure of the Seas is the second ship in the Oasis class. It first sailed in November 2009. The ship can hold 5484 passengers at double capacity (6780 at max capacity).
Allure of the Seas will begin a $165 million amplification in early 2020. In addition to new restaurants, the ship will be getting a new dry slide (the Ultimate Abyss) as well as a trio of new water slides (The Perfect Storm).
