As some long-time readers know, I almost booked the new all-inclusive Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana for spring break. I debated between that new resort and the Andaz Papagayo in Costa Rica, and I ultimately decided on Costa Rica.
But, I’ve been watching for reviews of the new Hyatt resorts in the Dominican Republic for two reasons. First, I haven’t ruled out a vacation in DR in the future. And secondly, I booked an all-inclusive in Cancun for next year that hasn’t opened yet and in fact was already delayed for two months. I’m hoping I haven’t made a mistake.
There are only a handful of reviews on TripAdvisor for the Hyatt Ziva and Hyatt Zilara (adults only) Cap Cana so far. But, some of the reviews are terrible!
Apparently, several of the restaurants, bars, gym, kids’ club, water park and spa are not open yet, and the place feels and sounds like a construction zone. Rooms in the family-friendly Hyatt Ziva are not yet ready, so families with kids were moved to the Hyatt Zilara. Guests of the adults-only Hyatt Zilara are pissed that children are now invading their quiet space.

There are only 10 reviews on TripAdvisor for both properties combined, so it’s still very early.
Will the Resort Recover?
First impressions do matter. I’m sure that some of the guests that arrive this week or even throughout the next few months may not return. It sucks to arrive somewhere that is not fully functioning. I hope that Hyatt invites these guests to return for a future stay for free or at a big discount.
However, if the hotel finishes construction soon, then I’m sure the positive reviews will outweigh the opening negative reviews. On paper, the resort looks fabulous!
I’m betting there are some bloggers who are there this week who will be reporting on this hotel soon. In fact, based on Mommy Point’s Instagram story, I have a feeling that she was there for the opening. Edited to add: Mommy Points on TPG just added a blog post about her experience at the resort. It’s worse than I thought!
Do you have a trip planned to Hyatt Cap Cana soon? How long after a hotel’s opening do you feel it’s “safe” to arrive to a construction-free hotel? Is it acceptable to stick families in an adults-only resort?
