After disembarking the Anthem of the Seas last week, my kids and I trekked into New York City for a few nights. We stayed at TRYP by Wyndham Times Square South in a TRYP Premium Family room for 15,000 points a night (before Wyndham’s recent devaluation). The hotel was a very comfortable and convenient place to stay in the city.
Location
TRYP by Wyndham Times Square South is located near 35thStreet and 8thAvenue. It’s around the corner from The New Yorker hotel (another Wyndham hotel) and right next door to a police station. The location is way more convenient than the Hyatt Place we stayed at in Queens on our last trip to NYC.
Checking In
We arrived at the hotel around 11:00 a.m. I was really hoping for an early check-in so that we could get our luggage settled in the room before hitting the NYC pavement.
Unfortunately, our room wasn’t ready. I was a little disturbed to learn that this hotel doesn’t have a secure bellhop station to store luggage. The front desk attendant told us we could store our luggage in the library area around the corner from the front desk, but it was open to the public. I took our passports out of my backpack and shoved them in my small purse, and we crossed our fingers that our stuff would be there when we returned.
TRYP Premium Family Room
After exhausting ourselves in Manhattan, we arrived back at the hotel shortly before 4:00 p.m. Our room was ready.
The TRYP Premium Family room is huge! My kids were impressed with the size. The room felt like our own NYC apartment.
The living room area has a bunk bed, sofa (that unfolds to a bed), desk and a wet bar with refrigerator. There is a full bathroom off this room.
To the right and down a short hallway is a second full bathroom and a bedroom with two queen beds. QUEEN BEDS! Those are hard to find at many hotels in Manhattan. The beds were very comfortable and reminded me of Hyatt beds.
Both the bedroom and the living room have TVs.
While there isn’t a door to the bedroom and we could see the bunk beds from the bedroom, my oldest son and I were still able to stay up later than my younger kids on the bunk beds due to the lighting by room and the hum of the air conditioner.
Our room was on the 5thfloor, and we could barely hear any city noise. The only noise we heard was the occasional police car siren from the station next door, but we didn’t hear any of those overnight.
Having two separate bathrooms and a bed for everyone was great for me and my kids, as by the end of the trip we were all getting on our last nerves.
Nearby Food and Attractions
The hotel does not have a free breakfast; continental is around $15 and a full buffet is $20 per person. So, we looked outside the hotel for food.
Just around the corner, there is a deli that is like a small grocery store. I bought some juices and muffins for breakfast in the room.
There is also a McDonald’s and a Starbucks just down the street on 8th Avenue that would have also been fine for breakfast or a quick bite.
The subway station for 34thand Penn Station is ½ block down the street, as it has an exit on 35thstreet. We used that station to get to the World Trade Center, just six stops away on the E line.
There are also several movie theaters within walking distance.
TRYP by Wyndham Times Square South is actually 0.7 miles to Times Square. We walked and it wasn’t too far, but because of the pedestrian traffic and all the traffic lights it took a lot longer than we expected.
Bottom Line
For just 15,000 points a night, the TRYP Premium Family room at TRYP by Wyndham Times Square South was a total steal. The same room now costs 30,000 points per night, but I found some great rates with the Wyndham Rewards Go Fast rate. This price is a steal for the location and space!
If my family ever makes it back to the Big Apple, I wouldn’t hesitate to stay here again.
