By the time you read this, my family will be high in the sky on our way to Kauai and Disney’s Aulani Resort in Oahu. This trip has been a long time in planning, and I can’t believe our departure day is finally here!
We were in Hawaii almost exactly three years ago. It’s funny how each member of my family is looking forward to different aspects of this Hawaii trip!
The Kids
We hadn’t been back from Hawaii for too long when my kids were asking to go back. Here is what they’re excited to return to:
Pog Juice. Have you had it? It’s a combination of passion fruit, orange and guava juices that originated in Maui in 1971. The kids first tasted it when we ate breakfast at ‘Ohana restaurant at Disney World. The juice is hard to find in my city, and only one specialty store sells it. But, it’s plentiful in Hawaii and I promised my kids we would drink it every chance we get.
Surfing. Both of my boys took surfing lessons on our last trip, and they were a huge hit. I signed them up for lessons again on Oahu. There is a beach near Aulani with gentle waves that is perfect for new surfers!
Pools. My kids are nuts about pools. Aulani has probably the best pools we’ve ever experienced at any resort, ever! It has a lazy river, grotto pool, water slides, play structure and hot tubs. Our first hotel in Kauai has a really nice pool area with slides, too.
Aunty’s Beach House. This is the kids’ club at Aulani. My middle son had a blast at Aunty’s Beach House on our last trip when he was 7. I hope that he has as much fun there on this trip. While it gives us parents a break, my kids also like having some independence and playing with peers while on vacation.
Moana. My daughter is excited to meet Moana! She makes several appearances at Aulani.
The Adults
While the reasons for our fondness of Hawaii overlap with our kids’ reasons, my husband and I are looking forward to different things.
Na Pali Coast. This looks absolutely stunning, and it’s one of the reasons why we chose to visit Kauai instead of Maui. We will be seeing it from the sky from a small plane on our first day on Kauai.
Sugar Cane Canal Tubing. Ever since I showed this excursion to my husband, he was adamant that we do this. He and the boys are doing this on our second day in Kauai.
Laid-Back Locals. Not as much in the Waikiki area, but on our last trip in the Ko Olina and North Shore areas of Oahu we loved the laid-back attitude of the locals. We met some seriously friendly and calm people. Their moods created an overall relaxing environment that I haven’t found anywhere else in the U.S.
Lilinoe Kilikili. This is a massage I had at Aulani’s Laniwai Spa last time that uses “fine rain” as part of the treatment. I had never experienced anything like it, and it was spectacular! I booked it again for this trip.
Hiking and Scenery. Hawaii is breathtaking, and what better way to see the scenery than by hiking? We plan to do at least one hike on Kauai and see several waterfalls.
Pie. Yes, pie. We discovered on our last trip that Hawaii restaurants are known for their yummy pies. We ate a fabulous Hula Pie at Duke’s on Waikiki and another one at Monkey Pod across from Aulani.

You have to check out Waimea Canyon in Kauai. On your way back down, hopefully you can stop at The Saddle Room (only open Thurs – Sunday; check yelp for times) for either lunch or dinner. We had burgers and Mai Tai’s. Enjoy your trip!

Thanks for the recommendation, Erik! We will check it out.

Can’t remember if I’ve mentioned it before, but check out Bubba Burgers on Kauai, see http://www.bubbaburger.com for locations. Great local grass-fed beef burgers.
