Hacking “Panera Bread” Amex Offer (a.k.a Don’t Be Like Me!)

As you probably know, Amex is on a roll lately with various offers. Most  are of little use to me, but some are quite appealing. Panera Bread is one of them. You  know, the one where you get 500 Membership Rewards after spending $10? I speculatively value the points at $6, unless Amex closes my accounts. But assuming nothing bad happens, it’s a very compelling offer indeed.

I actually love Panera Bread, but my problem with it is that the food seems overpriced and they give you teeny tiny portions. Am I the only one who feels that way? Maybe I’ve just become Americanized and got used to huge portions and unlimited refills, I don’t know. But regardless, Amex offer definitely takes the sting out of it.

So, few weeks ago my husband and I had a date night. The plan was to go out to eat and maybe see a movie. Hmm, which restaurant should we pick? My husband mentioned Olive Garden but said he was flexible. Lies!!!

We were passing by Panera Bread and I remembered the Amex offer. Sure, it’s really closer to a fast food place, but how can I resist? I suggested it to my husband and his lack of enthusiasm should have told me this was a bad idea. But 500 MR points (per transaction) kept calling my name and I caved in. So, we go inside and I order a meal with green tea. Usually, I just get free water, but the drink puts my total over $10, a win-win.

My husband gets one lonely muffin.

In case you are wondering, he is a bit on passive-aggressive side. I started pleading with him to please get a real meal and he told me he doesn’t like anything in Panera Bread. Why didn’t you tell me that before we came here???! He said he was hoping they’ve changed the menu, but apparently not.

So, we just sat there, me eating my soup and sandwich and him enjoying the muffin. We got up and started walking out of the restaurant  when this older guy stopped my husband and said: “I bet it’s your Ford Mustang outside!” My husband’s face instantly  lit up and they got into a 20-minute conversation about cars.

My husband was so excited that the guy pegged him as a proud Mustang owner. I looked around and it wasn’t all that amazing. There was a family with a tiny baby, some older ladies and us in Panera Bread at that time. I would call it an educated guess. But regardless, the evening just got a whole lot better.

Oh, and by the way, tomorrow we are going to Olive Garden. Naturally, I plan to take advantage of Amex offer where you get $10 of $40 purchase.  My husband approves. BTW, you can also get a bonus $10 card  on top of it when you buy $50 worth of gift cards, so this is a more lucrative option.

Readers, what Amex offers are you planning to hack?

  1. maybe you can help me. I am an authorized signer on my husbands SPG card. How can I load offers on both his and my card. I know about the 2 browser tip. but it only seems to load on his card since he is the primary.

    • @Hilde I checked around the web and can’t find a definitive answer. The only thing I can think of is to Sync your card to your Facebook or Twitter account (either one will work). Go through this link:
Since your card has a different number, I believe you should be able to double dip on offers. Let me know if this strategy works!

  2. I am an authorized user on my husband’s card and I have my own sign on with my own login and it seems like I can get the offers on both cards. I haven’t sync’d anything through Twitter though if that is what you’re asking.
