Miles and Points Recap: New Hyatt Program, IHG PointBreaks Full Preview List, Free Avios, Disney Cruises and More!

This is a news recap from last week, tailored to regular family. For faster updates, follow me on Twitter or check my feed on the right side of the blog.

1) Somehow I missed this deal few weeks ago, but better late than never. Well, unless the promo has expired, which isn’t the case here. Anyway, my reader Uri has pointed out that there is an opportunity to potentially pick up free 1,000 Avios points. Details in this post. I went ahead and transferred 250 Membership Rewards points, which will hopefully trigger the bonus. We’ll see. I can’t vouch that  you’ll end up getting the points, but you would only be risking 250 MR points, so it’s not a huge loss either way.

2) Get a $20 Visa Prepaid card with $300 in Visa gift card purchases in Staples, made before October 29th. Obviously, this will work best if you have Chase Ink Plus or another card that earns 5 points on office supply purchases. In-store only. Hat tip to DoC

3) Get free 5,000 Lufthansa miles when you book a hotel through their portal. This could be a good deal for topping off an account. Lufthansa miles can be redeemed on United flights as long as “saver” level award is available. One-way redemptions are permitted. Lufthansa Miles and More program partners only with SPG.

4) Through October 30th, get a 75% bonus on purchase of Club Carlson points. This brings the cost down to 0.4 cents per point.  It could make sense to do it under the right circumstances, specifically for  Category 1 and Category 2  properties. Those cost 9,000 and 15,000 points per night, respectively. Obviously, don’t buy these points speculatively. Just don’t! (hat tip to OMAAT)

5) Disney Cruise Line released January – May 2018 itineraries to the public yesterday. As Nancy mentioned in her post 10 Tips for First-Timers on Disney Cruise Line, cruises are usually the least expensive when new dates/itineraries are released, and prices go up as cabins are filled. DCL will be sailing to the Dutch Caribbean island of Bonaire for the first time. For the scoop on where the four ships are sailing, see this post on Disney Cruise Line Blog.

6) Buy IHG points and get 100% bonus through November 16th. The price works out to be around 0.58 cents per point. Not worth it for most folks, but some will find it lucrative, I’m sure. Once again, I don’t recommend you buy these points speculatively. My SIL, I’m looking at you!

7) Doctorofcredit reports that some folks are seeing an offer of 30,000 points on Amex SPG card. Try this link in different browsers.

8) Wyndham has added 17,000 vacation rentals to its pool of properties available via points.  You can see the listings on this site, but you will have to book over the phone. Before you get too excited, many report very little award availability at the best properties. Still, it’s good news for those who have  a lot of Wyndham points because it gives you additional options.

9) New IHG PointBreaks preview list has been released. The properties should be bookable on Monday. I’m not seeing any incredible deals, but you may disagree. As always, it depends on your upcoming plans.

10) Huge  changes are coming to Hyatt program on March 1st, 2017. I won’t go into details, see them here  This is fantastic news for accidental Diamond members like my husband who got the status for free via match. Even though we will lose the top tier status, the downgrade will not be as bad. In March we should get 4 Club Lounge certificates valid on paid or award stays, good till February of 2018. There are also late checkout and potential room upgrade benefits. Nice!

11) The travel planner’s single biggest mistake by The Deal Mommy. I agree with this post 100%.
